106 - Der afrikanische Musiker FELA KUTI wurde 1938 in Nigeria geboren. Sein späteres musikalisches Talent bekam er von seinem Vater und seine politische Aktivität von seiner Mutter in die Wiege gelegt. Auf Wunsch seiner Eltern ging er nach England, um dort Medizin zu studieren. Er schrieb sich aber stattdessen am Frinity College of Music ein, um dort Klavier, Komposition und Musiktheorie zu studieren. Damit legte er seinen Grundstein für sein späteres Leben.
1968 bezeichnete er seinen Musik Stil Afro Beat, um damit dem USA dominierten Jazz eine afrikanische Richtung entgegenzusetzen. Bei einem längeren Aufenthalt in den USA lernte er viele Jazz Größen kennen, machte sich aber auch mit den Gedanken der schwarzen Bürgerrechtsbewegung vertraut.
Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Lagos gründete er den Shrine Club, Mittelpunkt seiner zukünftigen musikalischen und politischen Aktivitäten.
Dank seiner Berühmtheit konnte er sich auch gegen die Mächtigen und deren Militärregierung stellen und für die Rechte der Schwarzen kämpfen. Dies brachte ihm viel Ärger und einige Gefängnisaufenthalte ein. Er gründete auch seine eigene Partei die MOP - Movement Of The People.
Im August 1997 starb er an AIDS.
